Knowledge updates: Semantics and complexity issues

چکیده
We consider the problem of updating of an agent’s knowledge. We propose a formalmethod of knowledge update on the basis of the semantics of modal logic S5. Inour method, an update is specified according to the minimal change on both theagent’s actual world and knowledge. We discuss general minimal change propertiesof knowledge update and show that our knowledge update operator satisfies all theupdate postulates of Katsuno and Mendelzon. We characterize several specific formsof knowledge update which have important applications in reasoning about changeof agents’ knowledge. We also examine the persistence property of knowledge andignorance associated with knowledge update. We then investigate the computational complexity of model checking for knowledgeupdate. We first show that in general the model checking for knowledge update isΣ2 -complete. We then identify a subclass of knowledge update problems that haspolynomial time complexity for model checking. We point out that some importantknowledge update problems belong to this subclass. We further address another in-teresting subclass of knowledge update problems for which the complexity of modelchecking is NP-complete.

On Updates of Logic Programs: Semantics and Properties on Updates of Logic Programs: Semantics and Properties
In this paper, we consider an approach to update nonmonotonic knowledge bases represented as extended logic programs under the answer set semantics. In this approach, new information is incorporated into the current knowledge base subject to a causal rejection principle, which enforces that, in case of conflicts between rules, more recent rules are preferred and older rules are overridden. Such...
متن کاملTowards Well-Behaved Schema Evolution
We study the problem of schema evolution in the RDF data model. RDF and the RDFS schema language are W3C standards for flexibly modeling and sharing data on the web. Although schema evolution has been intensively studied in the database and knowledge-representation communities, only recently has progress been made on the study of RDFS schema evolution. Indeed, the flexible nature of RDF poses n...
متن کاملIncremental Tabling in Support of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
Resolution-based Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) systems, such as Flora-2, Silk or Ergo, can scale to tens or hundreds of millions of facts, while supporting reasoning that includes Hilog, inheritance, defeasibility theories, and equality theories. These systems handle the termination and complexity issues that arise from the use of these features by a heavy use of tabled resolutio...
متن کاملUpdating Semantic Web Data
The basic data model for the Semantic Web is the Resource Description Framework (RDF). From a data management point of view, it resembles a lightweight knowledge base. In this paper we address updates in RDF. It is known that the semantics of updates for data models becomes unclear when the model turns, even slightly, more general than a simple relational structure. Viewing RDF as a knowledge b...
متن کاملToward Updates in Description Logics
The use of DL systems to add reasoning capabilities to database is now a major trend in convergence between knowledge base and database system but is still confronted with the issue of data update. DL systems provide fact additions and retractions but no real object update mechanisms. We present a semantics for update that favours attribute values to concept membership and deals with incomplete...
